A page of computer specifications can make a simple purchase feel complicated. The useful starting point is your working day: what you open, what you plug in and where you use the computer.
Write down your everyday workload
Email, web browsing and documents have different needs from video editing, engineering software or games. List your essential applications and check their current recommended requirements before choosing a machine. For specialist software, confirm supported operating systems and hardware with the supplier.
Also consider what runs together. Video meetings alongside spreadsheets and dozens of browser tabs can be more demanding than any one task on its own.
Memory and storage do different jobs
Memory, or RAM, gives running applications room to work. Storage holds your files and installed software. More storage does not compensate for too little memory.
For a general home or office computer, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD are a sensible starting shortlist in our view, rather than a promise that every user needs that combination. A lighter workload may need less; large creative projects may need considerably more.
Check how much storage you already use, allow room for growth and ask whether upgrades are possible. Some laptops have memory that cannot be expanded later.
Look beyond the processor label
“i7” or “Ryzen 7” alone does not describe the age or performance of a computer. Compare the full model and generation, and consider the whole machine. A dedicated graphics card is worth assessing for applications that use one; it is not automatically necessary for email and office work.
Check the things you touch every day
- Is the screen comfortable to read?
- Does the keyboard suit you?
- Are there enough ports for your equipment?
- Will it support your monitors and docking arrangement?
- Is its weight practical if you carry it regularly?
Confirm compatibility with existing printers, accessories and software licences. Include setup, data transfer, required adapters and warranty support in the total budget.
